A day has eight phases called prahars, but the four prahars of Maha Shivaratri night are the most sacred. These four stages represent a spiritual journey where the Lingodbhava ritual is performed to honor Lord Shiva. Each stage lasts three hours, beginning at sunset and continuing through the night. The prayers are strongest at midnight, when the ego is dissolved, and the soul connects with divine light. The worship ends during Brahma Muhurta, the holy time before sunrise. By staying awake and praying through these four prahars, devotees move from darkness toward true inner light.
Rudrabhishek is the main ritual done during the four prahars of the night to honor Lord Shiva. It involves pouring sacred items like milk, honey, curd, and water over the Shiva Lingam while chanting holy prayers. This act symbolizes washing away our pride and ego.
