Dwarkadhish Gopal Temple

Silver Coated Marble Idol of Lord Krishna.

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India

Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir is located in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is the second-largest temple in Ujjain. The main temple houses a two-foot-tall idol of Lord Krishna made of silver-coated marble. Besides Janmashtami, the "Harihar Ka Parv" is celebrated here with great pomp and show. During this time, Lord Mahakal's procession arrives at midnight, symbolizing the union of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. During this period, continuous two-and-a-half-hour-long worship takes place.

History of the temple

According to the scriptures, Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir is nearly two hundred years old. Historians believe that the construction of this temple was initiated by Maharani Baiza Bai Shinde, the consort of Daulatrao Scindia, in 1844, and the installation of the idol was completed in 1852. The temple complex has a vast courtyard where pilgrims rest during the Simhastha (Kumbh Mela) festival.

Significance of the temple

On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, while the entire country is immersed in devotion to Lord Krishna, at Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir, there is a tradition of not performing the regular evening Aarti for five days after Krishna's birth. During these five days, it is believed that Lord Krishna does not sleep.

Architecture of the temple

The architecture of Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir is a beautiful example of Maratha architecture. The sanctum sanctorum is made of sculpted marble, and the doors are adorned with silver. The temple houses idols of Lord Dwarkadhish, Lord Shankar, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Garuda. These idols are immovable, and there is also a statue of Rani Baiza Bai in a corner of the temple. The gem-encrusted door in the sanctum sanctorum was obtained by Daulatrao Scindia from Ghazni, which had been looted from Somnath. The temple's large pillars and intricate carvings are worth seeing.
