According to the Hindu Panchang, this sacred festival is observed on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna. It commemorates the divine wedding (Kalyanam) of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati and is also associated with Shiva’s cosmic dance, the Tandava, symbolizing the rhythm of the universe. This night is considered highly auspicious for seeking divine blessings, particularly for marital bliss and harmony in relationships. One of the most revered ways to honor Shiva and Parvati on Mahashivratri is through the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Puja, as Meenakshi is an incarnation of Maa Parvati, and Sundareshwar represents Lord Shiva.
According to sacred texts, Vidya Vidhi, a devoted follower of Maa Parvati, wished to descend to Earth to worship Ambika Devi. In Madurai, Maa Parvati blessed her with a divine boon, allowing her to serve the goddess in her next life. She was reborn as Kanchanamala, daughter of King Surasena, and later married King Malayadhwaja. However, they remained childless for years. After performing a sacred Homa, Maa Parvati manifested as their daughter, Meenakshi, born with three breasts. A prophecy foretold that her third breast would vanish upon meeting her destined husband. As Meenakshi grew, she became a fierce warrior, even challenging celestial beings. However, when she encountered Lord Shiva, her third breast disappeared, revealing her divine purpose. Shiva, as Sundareshwara, arrived in Madurai and married Meenakshi, symbolizing the sacred union of Shiva and Shakti—a balance of cosmic energies and devotion.
Alongside the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Puja, performing Soma Sundareshwara Pujan on Maha Shivaratri is considered highly auspicious. This sacred ritual is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Sundareshwara, a revered form in Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The name "Soma" refers to the Moon (Chandra), symbolizing Shiva’s cooling and soothing nature, while "Sundareshwara" translates to "the Beautiful Lord," signifying his divine radiance.
