Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Hinduism and is considered an extremely significant pilgrimage site. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is regarded as the goddess of power, energy, and destruction. According to mythological beliefs, the toe of Goddess Satiās right foot fell at this place when Lord Shiva was performing Tandava while carrying her body.
Due to this, the site is counted among the sacred 51 Shaktipeeths. The temple houses a fierce form of Goddess Kali. In this idol, Maa Kali is depicted standing on the chest of Lord Shiva, with a garland of skulls around her neck. She holds weapons and severed heads in her hands, with more skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue is extended outward, with drops of blood depicted on it. Notably, Maa Kaliās tongue in the idol is made of gold.
The present temple structure was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Datta. Construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. Kalighat Temple holds immense religious and cultural importance and has been a center of devotion for centuries. Devotees visit the temple to seek fulfillment of their wishes.
