Located in Uttarakhand, Rahu Paithani Temple is one of the few temples in India where Rahu is worshipped. According to mythology, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the demon Swarbhanu’s body. During Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu sat among the gods and deceitfully drank Amrit.
Lord Vishnu then used the Sudarshan Chakra to cut off his head to prevent him from becoming immortal. However, because he had already tasted Amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of Swarbhanu’s body became Ketu and the upper head part became Rahu.
It is believed that after being cut by the Sudarshan Chakra, Rahu’s head fell in the Pauri district, where this temple is located, and this place became famous as the Rahu Temple.
According to local belief, people worship here to get relief from Rahu-related doshas, especially Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha.
Some legends say that this temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya, while another belief says that the Pandavas built this temple during their Swargarohini journey to get relief from Rahu Dosha and worship Lord Shiva and Rahu.
