According to the Puranas, the story of Lord Rahu and Lord Ketu began during the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean). When the divine nectar of immortality, Amrit, emerged, the demon Swarbhanu disguised himself and drank it. Lord Vishnu, in His Mohini form, immediately severed the demon's head with his Sudarshana Chakra. Because he had consumed the nectar, both parts remained immortal. The head became known as Lord Rahu, and the body as Lord Ketu. During this same event, the deadly poison Halahala emerged, threatening to destroy the universe. It was Bhagwan Shiva who drank this poison to save all creation, showing his immense power and compassion. This act established His authority over all cosmic forces, including the shadow planets.
