Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeethas in Hinduism and is considered a highly significant pilgrimage site. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who represents power, energy, and destruction. According to mythology, the toe of Maa Sati’s right foot fell here when Lord Shiva was performing Tandav carrying her body. Hence, this place is counted among the sacred 51 Shaktipeethas.
The temple houses a fierce form of Maa Kali. In the idol, Maa Kali is seen standing on Lord Shiva’s chest, wearing a garland of skulls, holding weapons and severed heads, with more skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue is extended with drops of blood, and notably, her tongue is made of gold.
The present structure of the temple was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta. Its construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. The temple holds immense religious and cultural importance and has been a center of devotion for centuries.
