As told in the Puranas, once Lord Vishnu and Brahma Ji disputed over who was supreme. A pillar of fire appeared, and both set out to find its ends - Vishnu Ji as a boar below, Brahma Ji as a swan above. Vishnu Ji admitted he could not find the end, but Brahma Ji lied. The fiery pillar revealed itself as Lord Shiva, who cursed Brahma Ji that he would not be worshipped. Angered by Brahma Ji’s words, Lord Shiva created the fierce Bhairav, who cut off Brahma’s fifth head. Because of this act, Bhairav bore the sin of Brahmhatya and wandered until, in Kashi, the skull dropped from his hand at Bhairav Kund. Freed from the curse, he was declared by Lord Shiva as the guardian of time and the eternal protector of Kashi. Since then, he has stood as the savior of devotees against evil powers and obstacles.
In this special puja, the recitation of Kalabhairavashtakam - a sacred hymn composed by Adi Shankaracharya - praises his protective might. It is said that even listening to it keeps evil powers away. Alongside, the Tantrokta Suraksha Havan invokes the fire element to burn away negativity and harmful vibrations. Performed at the holy Kaal Bhairav Mandir on the eve of Kalashtami, these rituals are believed to bless devotees with courage, stability, and protection.
