Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is considered the fourth among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is also believed to be a self-manifested Jyotirlinga. It is located on an island called Mandhata or Shivpuri in the middle of the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. The Jyotirlinga is present in two forms here - Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. The Mamleshwar temple is situated slightly away on the southern bank of the Narmada River, yet both are considered one Jyotirlinga.It is believed that the sacred sound “Om” was first uttered from the mouth of Lord Brahma, and even Vedic recitations do not begin without it. It is also believed that the Narmada River flows here in the shape of “Om.” Scriptures mention that merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga helps one attain freedom from sins. The glory of this place is also described in Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to a mythological belief, Lord Shiva visits this place at night to rest after traveling across the three worlds. It is also said that this is the only temple on Earth where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati play chaupar every day. After the evening aarti, the chaupar is laid out and the sanctum is closed. Interestingly, although no one can enter at night, the game is found disturbed the next morning. This phenomenon further enhances the spiritual significance of the temple. This is why, after visiting all pilgrimages, having darshan and performing puja at Omkareshwar is considered highly important.
