Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is the fourth among the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is considered a self-manifested Shivling. It is located on Mandhata (Shivpuri) island in the Narmada River in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.
Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped in two forms - Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar. Though located at different places, both are considered one Jyotirlinga. It is believed that the sound “Om” originated here, and all Vedic chants begin with “Om.” It is also said that the Narmada River flows here in the shape of “Om.” According to scriptures, merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga reduces the effects of sins. The glory of this place is mentioned in Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
As per mythology, after traveling across the three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night. It is believed that this is the only temple on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play a divine game of chaupar every day. After the night aarti, the chaupar is laid and the sanctum is closed, yet in the morning it is found in the same state, reflecting the temple’s divinity. Devotees also offer water from other sacred rivers here, completing their pilgrimage.
