The sacred festival of Navratri celebrates the victory of good over evil. Our scriptures, like the Markandeya Purana, tell the story of how the powerful demon Mahishasur troubled the entire world. When the gods could not defeat him, they combined their powers to create the divine mother, Maa Durga. On the auspicious day of Ashtami, Maa Durga's anger took the form of Maa Kali, who fought the fearsome demons Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija. This day is filled with immense divine energy, and it is believed that prayers and yagyas performed on Maha Ashtami reach the goddess directly, bringing her powerful blessings for protection and victory in all of life's battles.
This special Mahayagya combines three of the most powerful rituals to honour Maa Durga. The complete chanting of the Durga Saptashati narrates her divine victories, and listening to it fills the heart with courage. The 1,25,000 jaap (chanting) of the Navarna Mantra, 'Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Viche', is a deep prayer that calls upon the combined strength of Maa Mahakali, Maa Mahalakshmi, and Maa Mahasaraswati. Finally, the Nav Chandi Mahayagya is the greatest offering to the goddess. The sacred fire of the yagya is believed to burn away all our troubles, just as Maa Durga destroyed the demons. Performing these rituals at the holy Durga Kund in Kashi makes this prayer even more special.
