According to legend, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the demon Swarbhanu’s body. During the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu sat among the gods and deceitfully consumed the Amrit. Lord Vishnu, realizing the trick, used his Sudarshan Chakra to sever his head to prevent him from becoming immortal. However, having tasted the nectar, Swarbhanu became immortal. His lower body became Ketu, and his upper part (the head) became Rahu. It is believed that Rahu’s head fell in Pauri, where this temple stands today, now known as the Rahu Temple.
It is said that people worship at this temple to rid themselves of various doshas caused by Rahu. Special pujas are performed here to get relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh, Rahu-Ketu Dosh, and the effects of Rahu Mahadasha. Some believe the temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya, while another story attributes it to the Pandavas, who are believed to have built it during their Swargarohini Yatra to seek relief from Rahu Dosh and worship both Lord Shiva and Rahu.
