As per long-held belief, Omkareshwar is the only Jyotirlinga where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are said to play a divine game of chaupar (dice) every night. After the final aarti, a dice board is placed in the sanctum and the temple doors are closed. By morning, the dice are found mysteriously scattered, enhancing the temple's spiritual significance. It is believed that after visiting other holy sites, worship at Omkareshwar brings a sense of completeness to one’s spiritual journey.

The Jyotirlinga is worshipped in two forms: Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar. Although they are located on opposite banks of the river, both are considered part of the same divine presence.
The origin of the sacred syllable “Om” is said to come from Lord Brahma, and all Vedic recitations begin with it. The Narmada River is also believed to flow here in the shape of ‘ॐ’.
According to ancient scriptures like Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana, the mere darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is enough to wash away all sins.
Legend has it that after travelling the three realms, Lord Shiva comes here each night to rest and plays chaupar (dice) with Goddess Parvati. After the night aarti, the game board is set, and the sanctum is locked. The next morning, the scattered dice are found inside, a phenomenon that adds immense spiritual weight to this temple. It is believed that unless devotees offer their prayers at Omkareshwar, all other pilgrimages remain incomplete. Pilgrims often bring sacred water from various tirthas and offer it here to sanctify their spiritual journey.
