According to stories from scriptures, King Mandhata, who came from the family of Lord Rama, was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. He used to go to Kedarnath regularly and offer khichdi to Lord Shiva. Later, on Lord Shiva’s advice, he came to Varanasi and did deep penance. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared from the khichdi and formed a Shivalinga called Gauri Kedareshwar. This Shivalinga has two parts that represent Hari-Hara (Vishnu and Shiva together). It is believed that this Shivalinga holds the presence of Gauri, Kedareshwar, Mahavishnu, Mahalakshmi, and also Goddess Annapoorna, as it was created from khichdi.
