Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is revered as the Krishna of Kalyug because of a divine blessing given by Lord Krishna himself. His story begins in the Mahabharata with Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima, who possessed three powerful arrows (Teen Baan) gifted by Lord Shiva. These arrows made him invincible. With a promise to always support the weaker side, Barbarika stood ready to enter the war — but Lord Krishna saw a dilemma. Since the weaker side would constantly shift, Barbarika's involvement would eventually lead to the destruction of all warriors.
To prevent this, Krishna tested his strength and ultimately asked for a unique sacrifice — his head. Barbarika, understanding Krishna’s will, offered his Sheesh (head) with full devotion. Pleased by this selfless act, Krishna blessed him: in Kalyug, Barbarika would be worshipped as Lord Krishna’s form Shyam Ji, and he would fulfill the wishes of devotees who remember him with faith. His head was later found in Khatu, Rajasthan, where his temple stands today — a place of deep devotion and countless answered prayers.
