Shani Jayanti, observed on the Amavasya (new moon) tithi of the Jyeshtha month, holds deep religious, spiritual, and astrological importance. This sacred day marks the birth of Lord Shani, the son of Surya (the Sun God) and Chhaya (Shadow), revered as the divine dispenser of justice. In such cases, it is believed that even Lord Shiva’s Mahamrityunjay cannot protect the native. Only Shani’s own Mrityunjay Stotra, invoked in conjunction with Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva, is said to offer relief.

In Kashi, which is called the city of Mahadev, nothing happens without the will of Bhairav Baba, who is regarded as the guardian of the entire city. According to a mythological story, a debate once arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu about who was the greatest among them. During this discussion, Lord Shiva was mentioned, but Brahma's fifth head criticised Shiva, angering Him. In His fury, Lord Shiva manifested Kaal Bhairav, who then severed Brahma's fifth head. However, the severed head did not detach from Kaal Bhairav's hand. Lord Shiva told Kaal Bhairav that he had incurred the sin of Brahmahatya (killing Brahma), and to atone for this sin, he must wander across all three worlds. The place where Brahma’s fifth head would finally fall from his hand would grant him liberation. This happened in Kashi, where Kaal Bhairav attained redemption. Following this, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav here removes all suffering, evil eye effects, and obstacles, bringing relief from all troubles and afflictions.
