Bhai Dooj Pratham 4 Dham Special Yam Dand Mukti, Yam Stuti and Yamuna Dudh Abhishek for Blessings of Protection and Longevity of Siblings

In Sanatan Dharma, the festival of Diwali holds special significance. This five-day festival begins with Dhanteras and ends on Bhai Dooj. Every year, Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month and is also known as Yama Dwitiya. There is an ancient story behind this festival. According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Surya and his wife Sangya had two children: a son, Yamaraj, and a daughter, Yamuna. Lord Yama punished sinners, while Goddess Yamuna, with her pure heart, felt saddened by people's troubles and thus lived in Goloka. Goddess Yamuna would often invite her brother Yama for a meal, but due to his busy schedule, Yama could not visit her home. One day, Yama freed the residents of Naraka (Hell) and went to his sister's house for a meal. After the meal, Lord Yamaraj asked his sister Yamuna to request a boon. Goddess Yamuna asked her brother to grant that any sister who performs the tilak ceremony for her brother on this day would not have to fear untimely death. Lord Yamaraj granted this boon to his sister. This is the reason why, every year, Bhai Dooj is celebrated following this tradition, and sisters perform the tilak ceremony for their brothers. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Yamuna and Lord Yamaraj on this day bestows blessings of protection and longevity for brothers and sisters.

According to the scriptures, several rituals for the worship of Lord Yamaraj and Goddess Yamuna are mentioned, including Yam Dand Mukti, Yam Stuti, and Yamuna Dudh Abhishek. Yam Dand Nivaran Puja is a special religious ritual performed in Hinduism to seek relief from the wrath or punishment (Yam Dand) given by Yamaraj, the God of Death. This puja is conducted to protect individuals from untimely death, severe illnesses, accidents, and other life crises. Yam Stuti is a remarkable prayer revealed by Savitri, who is known as "Sada Suhagan" (ever auspicious). Additionally, it is believed that through the grace of Goddess Yamuna, the fear of untimely death is eliminated. Therefore, on the auspicious occasion of Yama Dwitiya, Yam Dand Mukti, Yam Stuti, and Yamuna Dudh Abhishek will be organised at one of the four sacred Dhams, Shri Yamunotri Dham. Yamunotri Dham is the first Dham of the Char Dham Yatra, and it is from this location that the journey to the Char Dham begins. For this reason, this puja will be organized at this holy place. Participate in this puja through Sri Mandir and receive the blessings of Lord Yama and Goddess Yamuna for the protection and long life of siblings.

Shri Yamunotri Dham, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand
Yamunotri Dham, the ideal starting point for the sacred Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, is a place where pilgrims receive blessings for a safe and spiritually enriching journey. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the temple stands in the Uttarkashi district, alongside the beautiful River Yamuna. A unique ritual at Yamunotri involves cooking potatoes and rice in the hot spring of Surya Kund, near the temple. Devotees offer these cooked items at the temple, and the rice is taken home as Prasad.

The original temple is believed to have been constructed by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century, although some sources suggest it was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Over time, the temple has undergone several renovations due to damage from natural elements. According to legend, the Sage Asit Muni, who lived in the area and bathed daily in both the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers. In his old age, when he could no longer travel to Gangotri, a stream of the Ganges miraculously appeared near Yamunotri for him. Additionally, Goddess Yamuna is considered the daughter of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and the sister of Yama (the God of Death). Worshipping Yamuna is believed to please both the Sun God and Yama, offering devotees protection and blessings.
