According to legend, Adi Shankaracharya is said to have ordered the original construction of this temple. According to the Shiva Mahimn Stotra, when the gods and demons fought and the gods were losing, they sought refuge with Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised them to first worship Lord Shiva. He then took the gods to the place where the Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple is located today, offering lotus flowers to Shiva. To test their devotion, Lord Shiva made one of the lotus flowers disappear. In response, Lord Vishnu decided to offer his eye in place of the lotus. Pleased by his dedication, Lord Shiva granted him the Sudarsan Chakra.
