It is believed that the sound of "Om" was first uttered by Lord Brahma, the creator, and no Vedic chanting begins without it. Devotees believe that the Narmada River flows here in the natural shape of “Om.” According to scriptures, merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga absolves one of all sins. The glory of this sacred site is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to legend, after roaming the three worlds, Lord Shiva rests here at night. It is said this is the only temple on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play a game of dice every day. After the night shayan aarti, a game board is placed inside the sanctum and the doors are closed. Strangely, although no one can enter the temple at night, not even a bird — the dice are always found scattered in the morning. This adds to the temple’s spiritual significance. For this reason, visiting and worshipping at Omkareshwar after all other pilgrimages is considered essential.
