Shri Adi Kaal Bhairav Temple is located in Kashi, the city of Lord Shiva. It is believed that nothing happens in Kashi without Bhairav Baba’s permission and the entire city is under His protection.
According to mythology, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu argued about who was the greatest. During this discussion, Brahma’s fifth head spoke disrespectfully about Lord Shiva, which made Shiva angry. From Lord Shiva’s anger, Kaal Bhairav was born.
Kaal Bhairav cut off Brahma’s fifth head, but the head did not separate from His hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav that He had incurred the sin of Brahma Hatya and must travel across the three worlds. The place where Brahma’s head would fall from His hand would free Him from this sin. In Kashi, Brahma’s head finally separated from Kaal Bhairav’s hand, and He was freed from the sin. After this, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav here removes sorrow, evil eye, negativity, and suffering.
