Legend has it that King Mandhata, a devotee from Lord Rama’s lineage, was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He regularly visited Kedarnath and offered khichdi to Lord Shiva. Following Shiva’s instructions, he also performed severe penance in Varanasi. From his penance, Lord Shiva manifested as the Shivaling made from khichdi, now known as Gauri-Kedareshwar. The Shivaling in Kashi consists of two parts, representing Hari-Hara. It is believed to embody the presence of Gauri, Kedareshwar, MahaVishnu, Mahalakshmi, and Devi Annapurna.
