As per the sacred legend, King Mandhata of Lord Rama’s lineage was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He regularly visited Kedarnath and offered khichdi to the Lord. On Lord Shiva’s instruction, he performed intense penance in Varanasi, from which Shiva manifested as a Shivalinga made of khichdi, known as Gauri-Kedareshwar. The Shivalinga is composed of two parts, symbolizing Hari-Hara (Vishnu and Shiva). It is believed that within this Linga reside Gauri, Kedareshwar, Maha Vishnu, Mahalakshmi, and Devi Annapurna, because of its divine origin from khichdi.
