According to the Ramayana, during the Lanka war when Lakshman was struck by an arrow, Hanuman crossed the ocean to fetch the Sanjeevani herb. To hinder him, Ravana sent the demon Kaalnemi, skilled in illusion, disguised as a Brahmin chanting Ram’s name. Hanuman instantly recognized his deceit and destroyed him. The gods then blessed Hanuman, declaring that He would be known as Mayapati, the master of illusion, from that day forward.
