According to a popular legend, Sage Markandey was born with a short lifespan. When he became aware that his end was near at the age of 14, he composed the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and, along with his parents, began worshipping Lord Shiva with deep devotion by creating a Shiva Lingam out of sand at the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti rivers. As soon as he turned 14, Yamaraj (the god of death) came to take his soul. At that moment, Markandey was deeply engrossed in meditation and chanting Lord Shiva's name. As Yamaraj approached him, Lord Shiva manifested in a divine form and forced Yamaraj to retreat. After this, Lord Shiva declared that Sage Markandey would remain immortal and proclaimed that in the future, people would worship Markandey first, and then Him.
Since this divine event, the sacred site has been regarded as a powerful spiritual center dedicated to Lord Shiva and His devoted follower, Sage Markandey. It is believed that any devotee who chants the Markandey Mahadev Mantra at this temple receives the special blessings of Lord Shiva.
