This special ritual is a powerful confluence of two fierce and protective forms of Lord Shiva—Maa Pratyangira and Ashta Bhairav. It eliminates all negativity, enemy obstacles, and tamasic energies from life. According to the scriptures, Maa Pratyangira emerged from Lord Shiva’s third eye, symbolizing immense power and intensity. Meanwhile, Lord Bhairav was born from Shiva’s nail and is revered as the protector and destroyer of the universe. Whenever chaos, tamasic forces, or demonic influences rise in the world, these two supreme deities manifest to restore balance. Maa Pratyangira is known for destroying negative energies, tamasic forces, and evil influences. As described in the Puranas, she has a half-lion and half-human form, symbolizing her immense power and ferocity. As per the Shiva Purana, when Lord Vishnu took the Narasimha avatar to slay the demon Hiranyakashipu, he became uncontrollably furious. To pacify him, Lord Shiva assumed the Sharabha avatar, but the situation worsened, and Lord Vishnu's rage doubled. In response, he took the Gandabherunda avatar and engaged in a fierce battle with Shiva’s Sharabha avatar.
This intense conflict instilled fear across the cosmos, and no power in the universe could stop this destruction. It was then that Adi Shakti herself manifested as Maa Pratyangira. Her thunderous roar pacified both Sharabha and Gandabherunda avatars, bringing them back to their original forms. Thus, Maa Pratyangira prevented an ultimate catastrophe and safeguarded the entire creation. When the Ashta Bhairav are worshiped alongside Maa Pratyangira, their combined power amplifies manifold. The eight forms of Lord Bhairav—Ashta Bhairav—act as cosmic guardians, shielding devotees from obstacles, enemies, and negative energies. Lord Bhairav is venerated as the deity of protection and justice, while Maa Pratyangira is worshiped as his formidable counterpart. Since both deities are renowned for their ability to annihilate malevolent forces, their combined ritual is believed to free devotees from negativity and bestow divine power.
