According to religious stories, Raja Mandhata, belonging to the lineage of Lord Rama, was an exclusive devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to regularly visit Kedarnath and offer khichdi (a dish of rice and lentils) to Lord Shiva. Following the command of Lord Shiva, he also performed severe penance in Varanasi. Pleased by his penance, Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Shivalinga from the khichdi, who is known as Gauri Kedareshwar. This Shivalinga of Kashi is made up of two parts, which is a symbol of Hari-Har. It is believed that the presence of Gauri, Kedareshwar, Mahavishnu, and Mahalaxmi, along with Goddess Annapurna, is present in this Shivalinga, as it originated from khichdi.
