This temple in Uttarakhand is considered one of the rare places in India where Rahu Dev is specially worshipped. According to mythology, during the Samudra Manthan, the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods and consumed the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu then severed his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. Since he had tasted the nectar, he became immortal. His upper body became Rahu and the lower body became Ketu.
It is believed that Rahu’s head fell at this very location in Pauri district, where the Rahu Paithani Temple now stands. Hence, this place is considered extremely powerful for Rahu worship.
According to local belief, devotees come here for relief from Rahu-related doshas such as Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha effects. Some traditions also believe that Adi Shankaracharya established this temple, while another belief states that the Pandavas built it during their journey for liberation from Rahu dosha and worship of Lord Shiva and Rahu.
