The story of Rahu's origin is told in the Puranas during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). When the divine nectar of immortality, Amrit, emerged, an asura named Svarbhanu disguised himself as a Deva and drank a few drops. The Sun and Moon gods pointed this out to Lord Vishnu, who immediately severed Svarbhanu's head with his Sudarshana Chakra. Because he had tasted the nectar, both the head (Rahu) and the body (Ketu) became immortal. Before the nectar, the terrifying Halahala poison had emerged from the ocean, threatening to destroy the universe. It was Lord Shiva who fearlessly drank this poison to save everyone, holding it in His throat, which turned blue. This act shows that Lord Shiva has ultimate control over all cosmic energies, including the powerful influence of Rahu.
