Hyderabad Bonalu Special Mahakali KumKum Archana, Sahasranamavali, and Maha Homa for good health and protection from diseases

Bonalu is one of the most powerful and emotional festivals celebrated in Telangana, especially in Hyderabad, in honour of Goddess Mahakali. The word "Bonalu" comes from "Bhojanalu" in Telugu, meaning meal or offering. Devotees prepare a traditional rice dish, carry it in decorated pots (Bonam), and offer it to the goddess as a token of gratitude and devotion. According to the Telugu Panchangam, Bonalu is celebrated every year during the Ashada Masam (June–July), on Sundays and Thursdays/Fridays, with the most important rituals typically taking place on the first and last Sundays of the month. It is observed on auspicious Thithis like Ashtami, Navami, or Ekadashi, depending on temple customs.

The Origin of Bonalu🌸
The festival’s origin goes back to the early 1800s, when a deadly plague struck Hyderabad. At that time, soldiers from the region who were stationed in Ujjain prayed to Mahakali Mata, promising to offer her a temple and Bonalu if the city was saved. When the plague ended, they returned and fulfilled their vow of building a temple, and thus began the tradition of Bonalu as a festival of protection, healing, and thanksgiving.
Ever since, Bonalu has been observed with intense devotion to seek the goddess’s blessings for health, protection from disease, and the destruction of evil forces. Mahakali is invoked in her fiercest forms, namely Yellamma, Maisamma, Pochamma, and Ujjaini Mahakali, as the divine mother who protects her people with unmatched power.

Why This Puja During Bonalu?🙏
During Bonalu, it is believed that Mahakali's shakti (feminine divine energy) is at its peak. Performing sacred rituals like Kumkum Archana, Sahasranamavali, and Maha Homa at this time is said to please the goddess and invoke her protective energy for the year ahead.
Kumkum Archana is a special offering using vermilion to honour the goddess's divine feminine power.

Sahasranamavali is the chanting of 1000 sacred names of Mahakali, which invites healing, purification, and divine presence.
Maha Homa is a powerful fire ritual that purifies negativity and attracts positive, protective vibrations into one's life.

These rituals are especially effective during Bonalu, as the collective devotion and cosmic alignment make it an ideal time to seek relief from long-term illnesses, chronic health issues, and emotional stress. Join this sacred puja through Sri Mandir, conducted in honour of this holy festival.

Mahakali Temple, Hyderabad - Telangana
The Mahakali Temple in Gowliguda is one of the oldest and most spiritually active temples in Hyderabad, especially during the time of Bonalu. Devotees believe that the goddess here responds quickly to sincere prayers, offering relief from diseases, evil forces, and personal suffering. During Bonalu, this temple becomes a vibrant center of devotion, where thousands offer Bonam, turmeric, vermilion, neem leaves, and coconuts, seeking the fierce protection and blessings of Mahakali Mata.

This temple plays a key role in Hyderabad’s Bonalu tradition, embodying the deep-rooted faith that the goddess protects her people like a divine mother. The intense atmosphere of drumming, processions, and traditional rituals during this time makes it a powerful space to connect with Mahakali’s energy.
