The 'Markandey Mahadev Mantra Jaap', known today as the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, was composed by Rishi Markandey in devotion to Lord Shiva. This mantra is especially chanted for protection from untimely death, longevity of children, good health, and mental peace. According to ancient legend, Rishi Markandey was born with a short lifespan. When he turned 14 and sensed that the end of his life was near, he began to worship Lord Shiva with deep devotion. Along with his parents, he built a Shivalinga out of sand at the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti rivers and began intense meditation and chanting of this mantra. While he was deeply engrossed in his devotion, Lord Yama (the god of death) came to take his soul. But as soon as Yama approached, Lord Shiva appeared in a divine form and compelled Yama to retreat. Pleased with Markandey’s devotion, Lord Shiva granted him immortality.
