According to religious scriptures, Skanda Shashti is an important festival for Hindus as it is dedicated to Lord Skanda, the God of War and the son of Shiva and Parvati. Lord Skanda is known by several names, including Muruga, Kartikeyan, and Subramanya. The festival is observed on the Sashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha every month. It is believed that worshipping Lord Kartikeya on this day blesses devotees with protection and helps resolve challenges. Therefore, on the first Skanda Shashti of 2025, a puja dedicated to Lord Kartikeya will be organized. Lord Kartikeya holds special reverence among Tamil Hindus. The story of his birth is very intriguing. A demon named Tarakasura performed intense penance to Lord Shiva and was granted a boon that only Shiva's son could kill him. After receiving this boon, Tarakasura began to wreak havoc across the three worlds. Distressed by this, all the gods sought refuge with Lord Vishnu, who then revealed the secret of Tarakasura's death. Subsequently, Lord Kartikeya slew him.
Since then, Kartikeya has been known as the God of War. According to scriptures, the six-headed Lord Kartikeya represents the six siddhis, and as the bestower of siddhis, Kartikeya is primarily worshipped in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, Subramanya Shakti Kavacham and Vel Archana will be organized at the renowned Sri Kavadi Pazhani Andavar Temple in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The scriptures highlight the significance of rituals like the Subramanya Shakti Kavacham and Vel Archana to invoke the blessings of Lord Muruga, the embodiment of valor and wisdom. Subramanya Shakti Kavacham involves the recitation of powerful mantras from the Kavacham. On the other hand, the Vel is considered a symbol of divine energy that eliminates negativity and removes obstacles. Initially, plans were made to construct a temple near the existing Lord Murugan temple in Pazhani. However, it was eventually decided to build the temple in Salem. On August 26, 1946, the foundation for the temple was laid, marking the beginning of its construction.
The temple was completed on January 23, 1961, and consecrated as the Sri Kavadi Pazhani Andavar Temple. Alongside the main sanctum, shrines for the Navagrahas (nine celestial deities) and other sacred spaces were added, and the Kumbabhishekam (sacred consecration ceremony) was performed. On February 1, 1971, the temple further expanded with the construction of the majestic Raja Gopuram (royal tower) and shrines for Goddess Kali, the Sun, and Moon gods. This temple is also revered as the 9th Padai Veedu (sacred abode) of Lord Murugan, making it a significant site of worship for devotees.
