Similarly, the Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Hinduism and is considered a highly significant pilgrimage site. According to legends, the toe of Goddess Sati's right foot fell here when Lord Shiva was performing tandava with her corpse. The temple houses a fierce idol of Goddess Kali. In this idol, Maa Kali is seen placing her foot on Lord Shiva’s chest. She wears a garland of human skulls, holds a few skulls and a scythe in her hands, and has a few skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue is protruding, with drops of blood dripping from it. Notably, the idol’s tongue is made of gold. The current temple was constructed under the patronage of the Saborno Roychoudhury family & Babu Kaliproshad Dutto, with construction starting in 1798 and completing in 1809.
