According to the Ramayan, during the Lanka war, when Lakshman was struck by an arrow and Hanuman was crossing the ocean to bring the Sanjeevani herb, Ravana sent the demon Kalnemi to block his path. Skilled in illusion and shape-shifting, Kalnemi disguised himself as a Brahmin and began chanting Ram’s name to trick Hanuman. Recognising the demon’s magic instantly, Hanuman defeated him.
Pleased by Hanuman’s wisdom and strength, the gods blessed him and said that from that day, he would also be known as Mayapati. In this form, Hanuman is worshipped at Mayapati Hanuman Temple in Ujjain. The temple has a south-facing idol of Hanuman, and it is believed that worshipping here removes all sorrows.
