Shri Aadikal Bhairav Temple – In Kashi, the city of Mahadev, nothing happens without the will of Bhairav Baba, and the guardianship of the entire city lies in his hands. According to mythology, once Brahma and Vishnu began debating who among them was the greatest. When Shiva’s name arose in the argument, Brahma’s fifth head insulted Shiva, angering Him. In that very moment, Kal Bhairav manifested from Shiva’s wrath.
Kal Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head for his arrogance, but the severed head remained stuck to his hand. Shiva declared that Kal Bhairav had incurred the sin of Brahma-hatya. To free himself, he must wander across all three worlds until the head dropped on its own. The head finally fell in Kashi, releasing him from the sin. Shiva then appointed Kal Bhairav as the Kotwal (chief protector) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Bhairav Baba here removes suffering, evil eye, obstacles, and deep distress.
