Madhvacharya began Annadanam at Udupi by opening the doors to everyone, regardless of caste, class or background. Udupi does not simply serve food, it honours food as Anna Brahma - God in the form of nourishment. Between 5,000 and 30,000 devotees are fed here every single day, sitting together on banana leaves, receiving the same meal, as equals. This is not a charity. It is a philosophy - one that has been lived out, meal by meal, for eight unbroken centuries.
