Every other Shraddh offering reaches the ancestor through one channel. Water through Tarpan, food through the Brahmin, light through the Diya but Panchbali is different. It is Step 55 of the complete 57-step Gaya Shraddh sequence - placed there because it is the offering that ensures the completeness of everything before it. The Garuda Purana describes the dogs at Yama's threshold as guardians of the ancestral path. Shwanbali addresses them directly so the ancestor's passage through Yama's realm is navigated with their assistance, not their resistance.
Kaakbali - Crow Seva
The crow is the Pitru-doot, the direct messenger of the ancestors, the being the tradition designates to carry offerings from the mortal world to the ancestral realm. When a crow accepts the Kaakbali, the tradition confirms the offering has arrived. It is the most direct sign in all of Shraddh.
Devadibali - Deva Seva The Devas govern every dimension of the ancestor's journey toward liberation. Devadibali honours all of them simultaneously, seeking their collective grace for the ancestor's forward movement through every plane they traverse.
Pipeelikaadibali - Ant Seva The most easily forgotten life in creation. Pipeelikaadibali follows the principle of Jeev-Daya, ensuring that the ancestor's journey through all of existence is acknowledged at every level, however small. This Bali completes the offering by leaving nothing unacknowledged.

The Garuda Purana clearly states that ancestors reside in Pitru Loka in a “vayu-rupa” (air-like form) and return to their descendants during Pitru Paksha. The ancestors are said to reside in Chandraloka, and during Pitru Paksha, the distance between Earth and the Moon is at its shortest, both scientifically and spiritually. The verse “Ye ke chasmatkule jata aputta gotravighrahah” clearly indicates that even in the absence of a son, a daughter or any descendant can perform Shraadh.
Yes! Shraadh is not performed only for deceased parents - it can also be performed for grandparents, maternal grandparents, great-grandparents, and any departed ancestor of the family. Even if all three generations are alive, their ancestors (such as great-grandparents) may still be awaiting Shraadh. The Sankalp during Pitru Paksha is always made for “all the ancestors of the lineage.”
Pitru rituals, Tarpan, and Shraadh can be performed throughout the year, but their spiritual significance during Pitru Paksha is believed to be thousands of times greater. The reason is that during this fortnight, ancestors are believed to come closer to Earth, allowing offerings to reach them more directly and immediately. Just as there is a difference between making a phone call and speaking to someone face-to-face, Shraadh during Pitru Paksha is like speaking to them face-to-face. The Markandeya Purana states that Tarpan performed during Pitru Paksha keeps the ancestors satisfied throughout the year.
