There’s a beautiful reason behind Bahula Chaturthi fasting. Read the full story of devotion, cows, and Lord Krishna’s blessing.
Once, in Nand Baba's cowshed, Lord Krishna became deeply attached to a cow named Bahula. She had a young calf who stayed with her, and Krishna spent much of his time with Bahula. One day, Krishna decided to test Bahula’s devotion. Disguising himself as a lion, he approached Bahula to hunt her. Frightened, Bahula pleaded, “Please don’t kill me now. My calf has been hungry since morning. Let me go home to feed him, and I promise to return to you.” After gaining permission, Bahula went back to Nand Baba’s cowshed, showered her calf with love, and fed him milk. Then, staying true to her word, she returned to the lion and said, “Now you can hunt me to satisfy your hunger.” At this moment, Lord Krishna revealed his true form and said, “Bahula, you have succeeded in your test. I bless you that the Krishna Chaturthi of Bhadrapada will be celebrated as Bahula Chaturthi. On this day, people will worship you as a mother.” Since then, those who observe this vrat see their wishes fulfilled and experience prosperity. On this day, cows are worshipped with devotion, as they nourish and protect humans just like mothers care for their children. This is the story of Bahula Chaturthi. May your vrat be successful, and may Lord Krishna bless your children with a long life!
