It is said that this place was once a dense forest filled with khair trees. The goddess is believed to have manifested beneath one of these trees. Hence, the sacred site came to be known as “Khaira Bhavani.” The idol of Goddess Bhavani is considered swayambhu (self-manifested), and many devotees have reported experiencing miraculous events here. During Navratri, special rituals and a grand fair are organized, attracting lakhs of devotees. Around 150 years ago, while the railway line between Gonda and Balrampur was being laid, a miraculous event occurred. The tracks laid during the day would mysteriously get displaced by night. After this happened multiple times, the railway officials were perplexed. It is said that an officer then had a divine vision in his dream in which the Goddess revealed that this place was her sacred abode and no railway line should pass through it. Following this, the authorities respectfully altered the route and constructed the railway line away from the temple site.
The architecture of Khaira Bhavani Temple is a beautiful example of traditional Indian temple design. The temple's towering shikhara, typical of North Indian temples, is impressive and attracts devotees from a distance. In the main sanctum, the idol of the Goddess is decorated with flowers and sacred cloth. The temple complex is peaceful and clean, featuring several smaller shrines, a yajna hall, and a dharmashala. The carvings on the walls, the mythological depictions on the pillars, and the grandeur of the entrance make it a visually stunning religious site. The architecture appeals not only to devotees but also to researchers and artists.

During special festivals, the timings may change, and devotional singing and night-long vigils are also organized.
