Uttarakhand, known for its spiritual legacy and scenic landscapes, is home to several ancient temples that attract both pilgrims and history enthusiasts. One such remarkable site is the Katarmal Surya Temple, located about 18 kilometers from Almora in the Kumaon region. This east-facing temple is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) and is considered the second-largest Sun Temple in India, after the famous Konark Sun Temple in Odisha. Situated amidst peaceful surroundings and stunning hill views, Katarmal Surya Temple is a hidden architectural and cultural gem that draws visitors from across the globe.

According to legends, the Katarmal Surya Temple was built between the 6th and 9th centuries by King Katarmalla of the Katyuri dynasty. It is said that the king belonged to the Suryavanshi lineage, which traces its origin to Lord Surya himself. This ancestral devotion to the sun god inspired the construction of this magnificent temple. A mythological tale associated with the temple narrates that sages once meditated in the Dronagiri mountain caves but were disturbed by evil forces. In search of peace, they gathered on the banks of the Kosi River and performed prayers to Lord Surya. Pleased by their devotion, the deity placed his energy in a sacred stone called Vatshila, where the sages continued their penance. King Katarmalla later built the temple on this very site to honor Lord Surya, also known as Badaditya in the region. Remarkably, it is said that the decision to build the temple was taken overnight, and by sunrise the next day, a portion of the temple spire had already been constructed. Although time has left parts of the temple in ruins, it still stands as a symbol of devotion and heritage. In the 10th century, an idol from the temple was stolen. As a result, the ancient wooden entrance gate of the sanctum was removed and preserved at the National Museum in Delhi. This carved wooden structure is a significant artifact representing the artistic mastery of the Katyuri period.

The Katarmal Surya Temple is believed to be a sacred site where even divine beings worshipped Lord Surya. It is a place where faith meets energy, and devotees strongly believe that wishes made here with pure devotion are fulfilled. The temple is also said to be older than the Konark Sun Temple, making it a historically significant pilgrimage site for worshippers of Lord Surya. Built on a slope above the Kosi Valley, the Katarmal Surya Temple presents stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The temple complex includes the main shrine and 45 smaller shrines, dedicated to various deities like Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesh. The main temple is constructed in the Nagara style of architecture, featuring a square sanctum and a gracefully curved shikhara (spire). The structure is supported by intricately carved stone pillars. A special feature of this temple is that it faces east, allowing the first rays of the morning sun to fall directly on the deity. The idol of Lord Aditya (Surya Dev) enshrined in the temple is carved from the wood of a banyan tree, which is why the deity is also referred to as Badaditya. The temple's surroundings and design make it an ideal place for meditation and spiritual reflection.

Devotees offer flowers to Lord Surya as a mark of respect and devotion. No other specific types of prasad are traditionally offered at this temple.

By Train: The closest railway station is Kathgodam, around 100 kilometers from the temple. Kathgodam is well-connected to major cities across India.

By Road: Almora is easily accessible by road. The distance from Delhi (Anand Vihar ISBT) to the temple is around 350 kilometers. Visitors can reach Almora via Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses or private vehicles.
