Govind Dev Ji Mandir is a famous Vaishnavite temple located in Vrindavan, the city of Lord Krishna. It is also known as "Radha Govind Dev Mandir." This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his form as Govind Dev Ji.
The temple was built in 1590 by Raja Man Singh, a great devotee of Lord Krishna. The temple's construction was supervised by Shri Kalyandas Ji, a respected guru and Krishna devotee. Raja Man Singh paid for the entire building of the temple. Originally, the temple was seven stories tall and had a very large lamp on top. This lamp needed more than 50 kilograms of ghee (clarified butter) daily to keep it lit. Its light was so bright that it could be seen from many kilometers away. This made Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor, jealous. He sent his army to destroy the temple, and it remained in ruins until 1873. After Aurangzeb's time, the temple was rebuilt.
After the temple was destroyed, people stopped visiting it, and it became a deserted place. It was said to be haunted by spirits, but they never harmed anyone. Rebuilding the temple was very difficult because of its beautiful and complex design. Legends say even the spirits helped in rebuilding the temple. The craftsmanship is so detailed that no one could build it again in less than five to ten years.
Govind Dev Ji Temple has a unique architectural style. It was originally a seven-story building with beautiful pillars leading to the inner sanctum (garbhagriha). The temple's detailed artwork and design are very impressive.
