Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is a major Hindu festival celebrated every year to mark the victory of good over evil. It is observed on the tenth day of the Ashvin month in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, usually falling in September or October. The festival marks the end of Durga Puja and Navratri in many parts of India and Nepal. In these regions, it celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. In other parts, especially in northern and western India, Vijayadashami honors Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana, as described in the Ramayana. The name "Vijayadashami" comes from two Sanskrit words: "Vijaya," meaning victory, and "Dashami," meaning the tenth day. The festival is celebrated differently across India. In some places, processions are held with clay idols of deities like Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Ganesha, which are immersed in rivers or oceans. In other places, large effigies of Ravana are burned to symbolize the defeat of evil. This day also marks the start of preparations for Diwali, which comes twenty days later. Vijayadashami is a day of celebration, reflection, and joy, reminding everyone of the triumph of righteousness.
