Vasant Panchami is a Hindu festival that marks the arrival of spring and honors Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, language, and art. Celebrated 40 days before the full bloom of spring, it also begins the preparations for Holi, the festival of colors. On this day, people wear yellow clothes, cook yellow-colored rice and sweets, and decorate with mustard flowers, which are associated with the goddess's favorite color. The festival is especially important in schools, colleges, and temples, where Saraswati Puja is performed. Statues of the goddess are dressed in yellow and worshipped. Many families celebrate the occasion by encouraging their young children to write their first letters, in a ritual known as Vidya-Arambha, Khadi-Chuan, or Haate-Khori, depending on the region. In West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, and Odisha, Saraswati Puja is observed with great devotion. In Odisha, students perform Homas and Yagnas in schools. In Bangladesh, all major educational institutions celebrate the festival with holidays and puja. In Southern India, especially in Andhra Pradesh, the day is known as Sri Panchami, referring to another form of Goddess Devi. Vasant Panchami is a time to seek blessings, begin new learning, and celebrate the beauty of knowledge and spring.
