Pongal is a popular Tamil harvest festival celebrated mainly in Tamil Nadu and by Tamil communities around the world. It usually falls on 14 or 15 January, during the Tamil month of Thai, and coincides with Makar Sankranti. Pongal is a four-day festival that includes Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal. It is dedicated to Surya (Sun God) and marks the beginning of the Sun’s northward journey, known as Uttarayana. The festival is named after the dish “Pongal,” which means “to boil over” in Tamil. This sweet dish is made by boiling freshly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, often with coconut, cardamom, raisins, cashews, and ghee. It is cooked outdoors in sunlight in a clay pot decorated with flowers and turmeric. After offering the dish to the gods, it is shared with family, friends, and even cattle. Mattu Pongal celebrates farm animals. Cattle are bathed, decorated, and honored for their role in agriculture. Kolam, colorful floor art made from rice flour, is drawn in homes. The festival is more social than religious, involving temple rituals, fairs, games, music, dance, and community feasts, strengthening bonds and spreading joy. Pongal is also called Tamizhar Thirunal, the festival of Tamil people.
