Onam is a famous and joyful festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the official state festival and is enjoyed by all Malayalees, no matter their religion, caste, or creed. Onam is celebrated to welcome the spirit of King Mahabali, a kind and generous ruler who once ruled Kerala. According to legend, the gods were jealous of his popularity and asked Lord Vishnu to end his rule. Lord Vishnu came in the form of a dwarf named Vamana and tricked the king. Mahabali was sent to the netherworld but was granted a wish to visit his people once a year. That visit is celebrated as Onam. The festival lasts for 10 days and starts in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). The first day, Atham, and the last day, Thiruvonam, are the most important. People decorate their homes with colorful flower patterns called Athapookkalam, wear new clothes, and prepare a grand feast called Onam Sadhya. Traditional dances, songs, boat races (Vallam Kali), and games are also part of the celebration. The festival reflects the rich culture and unity of Kerala. Onam was declared the official state festival of Kerala in 1961 and continues to be celebrated with great happiness every year.
