Nirjala Ekadashi is a significant Hindu festival that falls on the 11th day of the waxing moon during the month of Jyeshtha (May/June). The word "Nirjala" means "without water," and on this day, devotees observe a strict fast, refraining from both food and water. It is considered the most austere and sacred of all the 24 Ekadashis. The festival is primarily observed by Vaishnavas, followers of Lord Vishnu, and is believed to bring immense rewards. According to the Markandeya Purana and Vishnu Purana, Ekadashi itself is a form of Lord Vishnu. Observing the fast on this day is said to wash away all sins and bring the devotee the merit of following all 24 Ekadashis in the year. The person who completes the fast is granted happiness, prosperity, and divine forgiveness from Lord Vishnu. It is also believed to lead to moksha (liberation) and longevity. The soul of a person who observes Nirjala Ekadashi is said to bypass the judgment of Yama (the god of death) and is instead taken directly to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu, ensuring eternal peace. This sacred observance offers spiritual benefits and is one of the most revered fasts in Hindu tradition.
