Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Kali Chaudas, Choti Diwali, or Roop Chaudas, is celebrated on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashvin or Kartika. It is the second day of the five-day Diwali festival. This day marks the victory of Lord Krishna and Satyabhama over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the removal of evil and darkness from life. The day begins early with a special oil massage (Abhyanga), followed by applying ubtan and taking a holy bath. People wear clean clothes, offer prayers, and prepare sweets and dishes made with poha, a symbol of the new harvest. Lamps are lit in homes, and aarti is performed by women for the well-being of the family. In places like Goa, people burn Narakasura effigies filled with firecrackers to celebrate his defeat. Some also worship Mahakali, perform rituals to remove the evil eye, and honor their Kuladevi (family goddess). Lighting diyas for Yama, the god of death, is believed to protect from untimely death. The festival is filled with love, light, and togetherness, and reminds us to defeat negativity and welcome peace and happiness in life.
