Makaravilakku is a significant event in the annual pilgrimage season at Sabarimala, Kerala. It occurs on Makara Jyothi day and involves lighting a fire at Ponnambalamedu, a hilltop located 1170 meters above sea level. This fire was lit three times with the help of the Travancore Devaswom Board, the Forest Department, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Kerala police, and other government agencies. The flame can be seen from Sabarimala, situated 544 meters above sea level, and is believed to be a divine sight by thousands of devotees who visit Sabarimala every year to witness it.
Makaravilakku marks the end of the two-month pilgrimage season at Sabarimala. The flame is lit using camphor during the Deeparathana ceremony at the Sabarimala temple, a time when pilgrims gather for worship. While Makaravilakku was once considered a miraculous event, it is now known to be a well-organized ritual carried out by the Travancore Devaswom Board and local authorities. The tradition of lighting the fire is linked to the Malayaraya tribe, believed to be the descendants of Malayaman Kaari, who have performed the ritual for centuries. Makaravilakku remains an important and revered part of the Sabarimala pilgrimage.
