Makar Sankranti is a major Hindu festival celebrated across India and Nepal. It marks the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makara), and usually falls on 14 January (15 January in a leap year). The festival is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and symbolizes new beginnings as the Sun starts moving northward, known as Uttarayana. People take holy dips in rivers like the Ganga at Ganga Sagar, and offer prayers to Surya. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different ways across India. It is called Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and Lohri in Punjab. In West Bengal, it is called Poush Sankranti, and in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, it is known as Uttarayana. Fairs or melas are held, including the famous Kumbh Mela (every 12 years), Magha Mela (yearly in Prayagraj), Gangasagar Mela, Makar Mela in Odisha, and Tusu Mela in Jharkhand and Bengal. In Punjab, Mela Maghi is celebrated in memory of 40 Sikh martyrs, and was earlier mentioned by Guru Amar Das. The festival is filled with traditions like kite flying, bonfires, feasts, and thankfulness, marking joy and unity across regions.
