Karva Chauth, also known as Karwa Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi, is a special festival celebrated mainly by Hindu women in Northern and Western India. It falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartika, which is usually in October or November. On this day, married women observe a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety, health, and long life of their husbands. The name "Karva" means a small earthen pot, and "Chauth" means the fourth day. Women worship using a decorated clay pot and break their fast only after seeing the moon. The festival is widely popular, especially due to its portrayal in Bollywood movies. Historically, the festival is believed to have started when Rajput men went away on military campaigns. Their wives prayed for their safe return. It is also linked to the wheat harvest season in North India. Another tradition linked to Karva Chauth is the bond of sisterhood. Newly married women would form a lifelong friendship with another woman as part of emotional support. Before the festival, women buy new clothes and karvas filled with sweets, bangles, and gifts, and celebrate by gathering together.
