About Jagannath Rath Yatra

The Jagannath Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is one of the oldest and largest Hindu festivals celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha. This festival takes place in the month of Ashadh (June–July) and celebrates the journey of the three deities—Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra—who are taken on a grand procession in massive wooden chariots. The procession begins at the Jagannath Temple and moves towards the Gundicha Temple, where the deities stay for a week before returning to their original temple. This return journey is known as Bahuda Yatra. The highlight of the festival is the procession of the three enormous chariots, which are drawn by thousands of devotees along the Bada Danda, the Grand Avenue. Each chariot is specially constructed every year using specific types of wood and is decorated in intricate designs. The chariots are pulled by four horses and have a charioteer (Sarathi) guiding them. The deities on these chariots are accompanied by smaller wooden images of other deities. During the festival, the chariot of Jagannath stops at the Mausi Maa Temple to receive offerings, including Poda Pitha, which is believed to be the deity's favorite food. The Ratha Yatra is a symbol of devotion and unity, bringing together people from different backgrounds to participate in this sacred event.
